George Frederick Smeed the tenth child of Edward Smeed & Sarah Ann Hayward born June 16th, 1874 at Fairlight Farm, East Grinstead & christened July 29th, 1874 at St Swithun’s Church, East Grinstead.
George & his family were living at Fairlight Farm in 1881 where his father was a farmer.
In 1891 George was helping his father who was farming at Fairlight Farm.
By 1901 George was working as a journeyman baker & living with baker’s assistant Rowland Robinson at Sackville Cottage, Hartfield, Sussex.
In 1911 George was living at Great Lodge, Tonbridge & with him was his widowed Father, Edward, widowed sister Kate Schofield & her daughter Kathleen & son Edward. George was working as a stockman for the Borough Council.
George married Florence Eunice Jessie Cheesmer in April-June 1918 at Horsham, Sussex. Florence was born February 10th, 1896 & christened April 5th, 1896 at Horsham, the daughter of Mary & Charles, Cheesmer.
The 1939 register shows George & Florence living at The Garage Trofts, Byworth, Petworth, Sussex. George was now a jobbing gardener
George died on March 13th, 1959 at Petworth, & was buried at Hills Cemetery, Horsham, Sussex.
Florence of 358 Shimmings, Petworth died November 13th, 1964 at King Edward VII Hospital, Easebourne, Midhurst, Sussex. Probate was granted to Edgar Frank Cheesmer, gardener, & her effects were £688.
